The Upland Holistic Development Foundation (UHDF) promotes the restoration and conservation of natural resources by working closely with upland ethnic communities whose livelihoods and ways of life have long been closely connected to forests, soil, water, and nature. Environmental stewardship is therefore not separate from community life, but an essential part of strengthening livelihoods, security, and quality of life.
UHDF’s environmental work takes many forms, including community forest restoration and tree planting to increase green spaces and protect community food sources and natural resources; agroforestry to enable communities to practice agriculture while caring for forests and making appropriate use of the land; and nursery development to produce seedlings for planting and restoring degraded areas, as well as collecting and propagating plant species that are suitable for local conditions.
UHDF also promotes soil and water conservation through soil conservation measures, sustainable management of upland agricultural areas, and the construction of check dams to slow water flow, increase soil moisture, and reduce soil erosion. In addition, the organization supports the establishment of firebreaks and encourages community participation in monitoring and preventing forest fires to reduce damage to forests and ecosystems.
These efforts place strong emphasis on the indigenous knowledge and traditional ways of life of ethnic communities. Community members are encouraged to participate throughout the process—from planning and implementation to the long-term management and protection of natural resources—because they are the people who live with and depend directly on these forests and resources.
UHDF’s goal is therefore not simply to plant trees or restore natural areas, but to strengthen community knowledge and capacity to care for forests, protect soil, conserve water, prevent forest fires, and use natural resources in a balanced and sustainable way. In this way, nature and community livelihoods can grow together and continue to thrive for generations to come.
We promote environmental conservation across watersheds by supporting communities through agricultural training, nursery development, Farmer Field School experiments, and tree planting in community forests. We also focus on establishing agroforestry plots and promoting soil conservation to increase agricultural productivity, enhance biodiversity and improve community nutrition, while sustainably restoring the health and ecological richness of the watersheds.
Community tree nurseries are an initiative that equips farmers with knowledge, skills, and practical experience in seedling production and care. From preparing growing materials and sowing seeds to transplanting and caring for seedlings until they are ready for planting, farmers can apply and build upon this knowledge to establish nurseries at the household or community level. The seedlings can be used for forest restoration and agricultural activities while also creating opportunities for livelihoods and additional income for families and communities.
Promoting Tree Planting in Community Forests
Promoting tree planting in community forests enables farmers and community members to participate in protecting, restoring, and conserving natural resources, while enhancing the health and richness of local forests and ecosystems in ways that reflect the traditional ways of life and indigenous knowledge of ethnic communities.
Promoting Soil Conservation
Soil conservation on sloping agricultural land is an important approach to protecting topsoil, reducing soil erosion, and slowing water runoff. It also improves water-use efficiency, helps retain soil moisture, and supports sustainable agricultural production.
Promoting Agroforestry Plots
Agroforestry is an agricultural system that integrates diverse crops and livestock with forest and environmental conservation. It promotes the appropriate, efficient, and sustainable use of natural resources. Agroforestry helps enhance biodiversity, maintain healthy soil and water resources, reduce environmental impacts, and diversify agricultural production, contributing to food security and creating additional income for farming households and communities.
